Philip M. Sampson is a physician assistant with more than twenty years of experience in Emergency Medicine. Over the course of his career, he has also worked in family medicine, internal medicine, urgent care, workers’ compensation, and pediatrics—giving him a broad and compassionate perspective on patient care.

Having treated countless young patients over the years, Philip witnessed one recurring theme: fear. The vast majority of children under the age of ten, even the bravest ones, experience deep anxiety when faced with needles or unfamiliar medical environments. Seeing this fear firsthand inspired him to create Jimmy Goes to the Emergency Department—a story that helps children understand what happens during a hospital visit and teaches that courage can coexist with fear.

Through his book, Philip hopes to make medical care a little less intimidating for children and a little more reassuring for parents. He continues to practice medicine and lives in California’s Central Valley, where he balances his professional work with his passion for helping families prepare for real-world medical experiences through honest, empathetic storytelling.
